Cognitively-Based Compassion Training Class

8 Wednesday Evenings, January 24 - March 13, 6-8pm

The Class: Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT) is a secular contemplative technique based on the Tibetan Buddhist practice of lojong, or mind training. This unique program uses guided meditation, insight activities, and contemporary research to increase self-compassion, compassion for others, and compassionate action in the world.

Created in 2003 by Dr. Lobsang Negi, a Tibetan Buddhist geshe and professor of Religion at Emory University and founder of the Emory Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics, CBCT defines compassion as “the warm-hearted concern that unfolds when we witness the suffering of others and feel motivated to relieve it.” Shared with many different populations, including on college campuses, in medical centers, and with veterans, CBCT is taught around the globe and plays an important role in advancing the science, study, and practice of compassion.

Students will learn the eight modules of CBCT, be led in guided meditation, and participate in insight activities that link heart and mind. Students will also be given access to the CBCT Guidebook and the Compassion Shift project, an online platform for connecting students to compassion resources offered through Emory University. The cost of the course is $80.

Teacher: Norah Charles, L.Ac., will be facilitating this program as part of her training to become a certified CBCT instructor. Norah is a long-time student of meditation and works as an acupuncturist at UKHealthCare where she focuses on the treatment of headaches, women’s health, gastrointestinal conditions, and acute and chronic pain. You may reach her at [email protected] with questions.

When: This CBCT course will run weekly for eight weeks starting Wednesday, January 24 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Shambhala Meditation Center at 305 W. Maxwell St. in Lexington.

Registration: The class is $80, and you may register online by clicking the registration link below.
