Maitri and the Five Wisdoms is an interactive meditation practice created by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, based on the traditional Buddhist principles of the five buddha families. Maitri, which means “kindness to oneself and others,” is a practice of self-acceptance, awareness, and openness to sense perceptions. It is available to practitioners at all levels, and has been used for many years at Naropa University in Colorado for in-depth training in Buddhist psychology and creative expression.

This program is designed to help us open to ourselves, each other and the space in between. We will use meditation, postures, colors, and open conversation to investigate these energies in a direct and personal way.  Through these teachings, we can discover our personal energy styles, including both the liberated ways and the less healthy ways in which our personalities express these energies. As a result, we learn to recognize and express the wisdom within us.

The program is open to anyone who has attended any programs at a Shambhala Center, and has already received meditation instruction.

Acharya John teaches Maitri and other Shambhala Buddhist programs throughout the US, Canada and Mexico. He completed the first three-year group retreat at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia. Richard and his wife Liz reside in Halifax, Canada.
